Notebooks for the fastidious and for beginners

ASUS has released two entirely different notebooks; one state-of-the-art and one for students. Let’s start with the Zenbook 3 Deluxe.

ZenBook 3 Deluxe achieves the almost-impossible, featuring a gorgeous 14-inch display in an elegant and compact chassis that’s no bigger than many 13-inch laptops. Measuring just 12.9mm thin and weighing only 1.1kg, ZenBook 3 Deluxe has an i7 processor, up to a 1TB PCI SSD, two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 for dual 4K UHD display support and a powerful quad-speaker audio system.

The all-aluminium chassis is carved from a single block of metal that then goes through a 40-step process to create the ultra-fine spun-metal finish. A two-phase anodising process is then used to create the golden diamond-cut edges and golden ASUS lid logo.

The challenge in designing an ultra-thin laptop boils down to basic physics. To prevent the laptop from getting too hot, warm air inside needs to be expelled as quickly as possible. ASUS engineers had to invent a brand-new cooling system, including a liquid-crystal-polymer fan impeller that’s just 0.3mm thick and a copper-alloy heat pipe with walls that are a mere 0.1mm thick. This cooling system is just 3mm high, and the warm air from the interior is expelled via hidden vents in the hinge.

ASUS cooperated with audio specialists Harman Kardon to produce an array of four separate speakers designed to deliver surround-sound. A four-channel smart amplifier ensures clear sound. For all these super features and thin-ness, the price is $2,750.

Student-friendly Chromebook

For students and schools – the requirements are quite different.

The ASUS Chromebook C202 is the ideal education computer, with its classroom ruggedness having been developed to meet the daily rigours and intense usage by students both inside and outside of the classroom. The ASUS Chromebook C202 is also designed for easy maintenance to minimise downtime. The result is a Chromebook that is designed for maximum usage, creating more learning opportunities for students.

All four exterior edges and corners of the C202 Chromebook are protected using reinforced nano-moulding technology, which ensures critical components are secured and the robust, reinforced rubber wrapped protective guard reduces the impact from any accidents. Drop tests at 1 metre suggest no effect on performance and the spill proof (66cc spill test) keyboard will cope with most drink accidents. Priced at $449, the C202 and the Zenbook 3 Deluxe are available from PCD Computers 88 Mercer St. Geelong.
